Why Playing Off Two Feet is Key to Finishing Strong at the Rim

When attacking the rim, we often assume the odds are in our favor. But here’s a surprising stat: NBA players shoot just 27-33% on contested shots at the rim—far lower than most expect. In my opinion, it’s clear that two key factors contribute to this low percentage:

1️⃣ Spacing and Off-Ball Movement

Without proper spacing, help defenders can easily disrupt finishes at the rim. Off-ball players need to move effectively to stretch the defense and create lanes.

2️⃣ Playing Fast Without Advantage

Speed is important, but only when it gives you an advantage.

• In a “blow-by” situation, speed helps you get to the rim quickly and efficiently.

• But if you have a defender on your hip, playing fast doesn’t automatically help you gain more ground. Instead, you sacrifice control and balance, making your shot easier to contest.

This is where playing off two feet comes in. By slowing down, staying on balance, and keeping control, you can:

• Read the defense more effectively.

• Adjust to help defenders.

• Create space to finish strong or find an open teammate.

Teaching players to recognize these situations and prioritize control over speed can lead to better decision-making and higher-percentage finishes.

Take your time. Play off two feet. And watch your team’s efficiency skyrocket.

Keep working,

Reid
